Touching Bases

“You’re out!” the third-base umpire shouted. Ronnie shook his head in disbelief and headed back to the dugout. He was safe. He knew that he was safe. As he entered back into the dugout, the atmosphere was eerily quiet. None of his teammates greeted him, or even looked in his direction. Ronnie was furious. “Painter!” he yelled. “Was I safe?” Ethan Painter, the team’s all-star first baseman, simply looked up at Ronnie and shrugged his shoulders. “Bill, Ryan, Zach, wasn’t I safe?” “I think so,” Zach replied, “but I’m not the umpire.” “Ronnie!” A voice behind Ronnie boomed. Startled, he turned around and saw his coach standing there. “Yes, sir?” Ronnie replied. “You were out;” his coach stated matter-of-factly, “You never touched second base.”
